About Arlington

The city of Arlington grew out of a trading post established at Marrow Bone Springs in accordance with the Indian Peace Council of 1843. Originally named Hayter, the town was renamed for Robert E. Lee's hometown in Virginia.

Upon the arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1876, Arlington became a market center for surrounding communities, remaining an agricultural community until after World War II. The construction of a General Motors assembly plant in 1951 spurred commercial expansion; city population increased by more than 75 percent during the 1970s.
